What is the Self-Determination Conference?
The Self-Determination Conference is the largest annual gathering of California families, self-advocates, providers, and case managers focused on the Self-Determination Program (SDP) — the option that lets families control their Regional Center budget directly, choose their own providers, and design services their way.
The 2026 theme — Technology, Community and You — focuses on how new tools (including platforms like SLS Compass), community knowledge, and family-centered design are reshaping what's possible.
Who attends
- Families and self-advocates exploring SDP for the first time
- Families already on SDP looking to optimize their budgets and supports
- Independent Facilitators, Financial Management Services (FMS), and other SDP-aligned vendors
- Regional Center staff and case managers
- Providers, advocates, and policy folks
Why it matters
SDP is genuinely different from traditional Regional Center services — and most families never hear about it from their Service Coordinator. The conference is where the community shares what works, what doesn't, and how to make the program serve real families instead of just billing codes.
